Usha Nadkarni, a name synonymous with powerful characters on Indian television, became an unforgettable figure after her role in Pavitra Rishta. Known for portraying strong, often negative characters, she managed to win hearts with her nuanced performances. Though her journey in the entertainment industry spanned decades, Pavitra Rishta turned her into a household name, making audiences love to hate her on-screen.
In a recent chat with Pinkvilla, the veteran actor opened up about her personal and professional experiences. She also gave viewers a glimpse of her cozy home, sharing memories and thoughts about the career she built brick by brick. The conversation soon drifted to her most iconic role, one that remains closest to her heart even today.
When asked about her time on Pavitra Rishta, Usha Nadkarni fondly recalled how layered and unique her character was. It wasn’t just another negative role. She said, “I got a role that was completely mixed. It was poor, arrogant, emotional, had love for her kids and was greedy. It was an amazing character. I work with my heart. Everyone liked it.” The role allowed her to explore multiple emotions, making the character memorable for the audience.
But the journey to landing that role wasn’t entirely smooth. Usha candidly shared that despite having already worked with Balaji Telefilms on two to three previous shows, she was asked to audition for Pavitra Rishta. The request left her upset. She remembered doing shows like Thodi Si Zameen Thoda Sa Aasmaan and Kuch Iss Tarah, the latter being a comedy, without ever needing an audition. So when the call for Pavitra Rishta came with the demand for a screen test, it stung.
Reflecting on the moment, she said she felt angry and insulted. “Itna kaam karne ke baad bhi Pavitra Rishta ke time, 1.5 panne ka scene karne ko lagaya. Bohot gussa aaya tha muje audition ko bulaya tabhi. Lekin kya karu, kaam nahi tha na. Chup chap bardaasht kiya aur kaam karke aayi. Mila muje. Pavitra Rishta kiya maine.” Despite her frustration, she knew work was scarce, and an opportunity like this couldn’t be let go. So she accepted the situation, performed the audition, and ultimately bagged the part.
The show turned out to be a milestone in her career. The character’s complexity and Usha Nadkarni’s heartfelt portrayal struck a chord with audiences. The success of Pavitra Rishta further solidified her place in the television world.
While recounting those days, Usha laughed about how her relationship with Balaji Telefilms evolved. She admitted that after Pavitra Rishta, she wasn’t called again for another show by the production house, but she harbored no bitterness. Instead, she said with a chuckle, “Balaji se rishta mera aisa ban gaya. Uske baad bulaya nahi, voh chod do. Lekin rishta ban gaya.”
Today, Usha Nadkarni continues to be cherished not just for the characters she’s played, but also for her no-nonsense attitude and infectious warmth off-screen.
