Television actress Shubhangi Atre is going through an emotional phase following the untimely death of her ex-husband, Piyush Poorey. He passed away on April 16, 2025, at just 48 years old after a prolonged battle with liver cirrhosis. The sudden news left Shubhangi in deep shock. In a recent interview, the Bhabiji Ghar Par Hain star opened up about her final conversation with him and the memories they shared.
Shubhangi revealed that she spoke to Piyush on the very day he passed away. She recalled praying for his recovery, hoping for a miracle even though the situation was critical. In her words, “I’m emotional and numb right now. I want to remember Piyush for all the good things.”
After hearing the news, she immediately made plans to travel to Indore, where Piyush’s family resides. She mentioned that their daughter, Ashi, who is currently in the United States finishing her final exams, would soon return to Mumbai. Once Ashi’s exams were over, both mother and daughter would leave for Indore to be with their extended family during this difficult time.
The news of Piyush’s demise stirred conversations online, and unfortunately, some people criticized Shubhangi after it surfaced. Many speculated about their separation, wrongly assuming it was driven by her rising success in the television industry. Responding to these assumptions, Shubhangi chose to clear the air. She revealed, “They assume I left him due to my success, but that’s not true. Our separation was a result of years of struggle. I didn’t leave because I became successful; I left because his alcohol addiction took a toll on our lives.”
Shubhangi detailed how she made every effort to save their marriage. Despite her attempts and repeated support from both their families, Piyush could not overcome his addiction. She disclosed that he had spent time in rehabilitation centers, but nothing seemed to work. The years of emotional and mental strain gradually wore her down.
Things between them started deteriorating around 2018-2019. Shubhangi admitted that the problems didn’t appear overnight but built up slowly over time. She reflected on those years as the most difficult period of her life. After much thought, she decided to step away from the relationship for the sake of their daughter’s well-being. It wasn’t a choice made lightly or quickly. She explained that protecting Ashi from an unhealthy environment became her top priority, and eventually, it led to their separation.
Despite the divorce, Shubhangi maintained a cordial bond with Piyush and his family. She believed in keeping relationships respectful, even after parting ways. She revealed that even after moving on, she encouraged him to seek help and hoped for his recovery.
For those unfamiliar, Shubhangi and Piyush had shared a marriage of 22 years before legally ending it earlier this year. Their divorce was finalized on February 5, 2025.
Through this ordeal, she continues to stand by her daughter and extended family, honoring old bonds with grace and strength.
