Aly Goni, one of television’s most adored personalities, continues to win hearts both on-screen and off. Currently seen bringing laughter to viewers in Laughter Chefs Season 2, Aly has also been in the spotlight for his relationship with actress Jasmin Bhasin. The couple, known for their endearing bond, recently took a significant step by deciding to move in together in Mumbai. But what should have been a happy, simple process turned into an unexpected struggle.
In a recent conversation on the InControversial Podcast, Aly opened up about the challenges he and Jasmin faced while searching for a new home. Aly revealed an issue that still quietly persists in some corners of society. Despite his recognition as a television star, he encountered rejection from landlords solely because of his identity as a Kashmiri Muslim.
Aly shared that while the entertainment industry never made him feel like an outsider for his roots, the housing market painted a different picture. “I have never faced discrimination in the industry for being Kashmiri. However, I faced it a lot during the house hunt. Aaj bhi hota hai,” he confessed. The actor described how several property owners refused to rent out their flats to him and Jasmin with a simple, cold explanation, “Hum Muslims ko ghar nahi dete.” Most of these rejections came from elderly landlords, exposing the subtle prejudices that still linger in urban spaces.
Aly acknowledged that even with growing fame and public acceptance, certain stereotypes hold people back in everyday life. It was a bitter reality check for the actor, who admitted he hadn’t expected such biases in a city that prides itself on being inclusive.
Reflecting on his professional journey, Aly recalled how the world of showbiz brought its own set of hurdles. Like countless newcomers, he too dealt with rejection and disappointment in his early days. “The struggle is there. It is everywhere, but in showbiz, we get a lot of disappointments,” he said. From endless auditions to missed opportunities and vague rejections, he admitted that there were times he questioned his place in the industry.
With the rise of social media, the landscape shifted further. New faces became overnight sensations with a single viral reel, leaving aspiring actors unsure about the traditional audition process. Aly noted how some young talents today don’t even know what an audition is. In his case, he credited a few genuine supporters in the industry who stood by him, notably television mogul Ekta Kapoor. Grateful for her faith in him, Aly mentioned that Ekta had always found a place for him in her projects, ensuring he stayed relevant and visible in the competitive world of television.
Despite his experiences, Aly remains optimistic about his journey. He understands that struggle never truly ends, no matter the career stage. Every profession comes with its trials, but the entertainment business has its unique mix of glamour and rejection.
