Sonu Nigam, one of India’s most beloved singers known for his soulful voice across multiple languages, has landed in legal trouble over a controversial statement made during a musical event in Bengaluru. A police complaint has been filed against the singer by a pro-Kannada organization, accusing him of making a hurtful comment that allegedly links a Kannada song request to a terror attack in Pahalgam.

What Happened at the Bengaluru Concert?

During a recent event held on April 25-26 in Bengaluru, Sonu Nigam was reportedly asked by a fan to sing a song in Kannada. Responding to the request, Sonu said, “Kannada, Kannada, Kannada… this is why what happened in Pahalgam, happened.” This comment did not sit well with many attendees, particularly members of the Kannada-speaking community.

Complaint Filed by Kannada Organization

The Karnataka Rakshana Vedike, a well-known pro-Kannada group, took strong objection to Sonu Nigam’s statement. In their complaint, they alleged that the singer equated a simple cultural request to a terrorist act, thereby portraying the Kannada community as intolerant and violent. The complaint further claimed that such a comment has the potential to incite communal tension and hurt the sentiments of peaceful Kannada speakers.

Sonu Nigam Responds to the Backlash

Following the outrage, Sonu Nigam clarified that he holds deep love and respect for the Kannada language and its people. He explained that during the concert, a young man had aggressively demanded a Kannada song, which he felt was inappropriate. “I’ve been singing in Kannada even before that boy was born,” Sonu remarked. However, his attempt to express frustration by referring to the Pahalgam attack became the focal point of the controversy.

Public Reaction and Ongoing Investigation

The incident has sparked a debate online, with many criticizing the singer for his poor choice of words, while others defend his right to free expression. The police have acknowledged receiving the complaint and stated that the matter is under review.
