Patna: The spiritual world stands united in concern and prayer as Premanand Maharaj, a revered saint and spiritual guide, continues his relentless fight against polycystic kidney disease (PKD). After 19 long years of medical struggle, the 71-year-old guru remains dependent on dialysis five days a week — a testament to his unwavering strength and faith.
Health Deterioration Raises Concerns Among Devotees
According to sources close to his ashram, Maharaj recently experienced a decline in health that required medical intervention. Once undergoing dialysis daily, he has now stabilized at five sessions a week under continuous supervision.
Since October 2, his regular morning padayatra — a spiritual walk symbolizing devotion and humility — has been suspended due to fatigue and weakness. The ashram confirmed that while his condition remains stable, doctors have advised him complete rest for an extended period.
What is Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD)?
Premanand Maharaj was diagnosed with PKD around 2006. The genetic disorder causes cysts to form within the kidneys, disrupting their ability to filter blood effectively. According to the National Kidney Foundation, PKD can lead to complications such as high blood pressure, kidney failure, and chronic pain, often requiring lifelong dialysis or transplantation.
The Role of Dialysis in His Recovery
For Maharaj, dialysis is not just a treatment — it’s survival. The process cleanses his blood of toxins and excess fluids, replacing the essential functions his kidneys can no longer perform. Typically, dialysis patients undergo three sessions a week, but due to his advanced condition, Maharaj requires it five times weekly.
Globally, over 2 million patients rely on dialysis or kidney transplants, with India witnessing a steady rise in such cases.
Faith Amidst Fragility
Despite his physical struggles, Premanand Maharaj continues to guide his followers through short discourses and spiritual sessions. His disciples describe him as a symbol of endurance and divine faith, inspiring millions across India.
Devotees from different parts of the country have begun organizing prayer gatherings for his recovery, while the ashram has urged followers to focus on his teachings of inner peace, resilience, and devotion.
For now, Maharaj’s padayatra remains suspended indefinitely — but his spiritual journey, marked by strength and surrender, continues to inspire.
