In the 1990s, Madhuri Dixit was one of Bollywood’s biggest superstars. Her charm, smile, and iconic dance moves won millions of hearts. But few know that one of her songs once sparked massive controversy—so intense that it was banned by both Doordarshan and All India Radio.
The controversy revolves around the 1993 blockbuster “Khalnayak”, directed by Subhash Ghai, starring Sanjay Dutt, Madhuri Dixit, and Jackie Shroff. The film, made on a budget of ₹4 crore, grossed over ₹21 crore. Yet, its most famous song, “Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai”, sung by Alka Yagnik and Ila Arun, became the center of a national debate.
Why “Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai” Was Banned
The song’s bold lyrics led to widespread outrage. Many activists claimed it was vulgar and derogatory to women. Complaints poured in demanding that the Censor Board remove the song and recall already-sold cassettes. The matter escalated to court, making headlines across the nation.
Court Verdict and Bal Thackeray’s Support
After a thorough hearing, the court ruled that there was nothing obscene or objectionable in the song. However, the controversy refused to die down. Interestingly, Shiv Sena leader Bal Thackeray publicly supported the song, stating that there was nothing wrong with it and calling the backlash unnecessary.
Despite his defense, Doordarshan and All India Radio imposed a strict ban on broadcasting the song — marking one of the rare instances when a Bollywood track faced such censorship.
The Song’s Revival Decades Later
Even decades after its release, “Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai” remains unforgettable. In 2024, the song made a stylish comeback in the film “Crew”, featuring Kareena Kapoor Khan, Tabu, and Kriti Sanon. Used as part of the film’s background score, the recreated version once again captured the audience’s love — proving that some classics never fade.
