In a candid interview, Bollywood actress Wamiqa Gabbi has raised serious concerns about the ongoing gender disparity in the Indian film industry. She questioned why male actors continue to receive high fees even after their movies fail, while female actors face both criticism and a pay cut in similar situations.
The actress, known for voicing her opinions fearlessly, spoke to Zoom and highlighted how pay inequality continues to plague the industry. She emphasized that the belief that male actors deserve higher pay due to their supposed box office pull is outdated and unfair.
“Why No Pay Cuts for Male Actors After Flops?” Asks Wamiqa
Gabbi openly expressed her frustration with the system, saying:
“I don’t understand the logic. Sometimes actors are paid huge amounts and their films still flop. Yet, their fees remain unaffected. Why this discrimination?”
She further added that women in the industry not only face constant scrutiny but are also expected to accept lesser pay as the norm. Wamiqa believes this mentality must change and said she is committed to fighting this bias in her own creative way.
Wamiqa’s Strong Stand for Equal Pay
Wamiqa Gabbi’s statement once again brings to light the persistent gender-based discrimination in Bollywood. She stated that even today, it is considered acceptable to offer female leads significantly lower compensation, despite their equal contribution to a film’s success.
According to her, the excuse that male actors bring in bigger audiences doesn’t hold up anymore, as successful films increasingly rely on strong female leads and ensemble casts.
